WestJet's media relations representative

Robert Palmer confirmed to

TRAVELHotNews.com that the airline

does not have any plans at this time to

charge a fee for a first checked bag

on trans-border flights.

WestJet first posted the announcement

on Twitter and Facebook following

an announcement from Air Canada on Friday that it was adding

a $25 fee for first bag checked on flights to the United States

and a $70 charge for second bags on some international flights.

WestJet's inital Facebook post read: “We have no plans at

this time to introduce a fee for checking a first bag on transborder

flights. Enjoy your long weekend everyone!”

The Calgary-based airline then posted on Saturday that it has no

plans to change its baggage fee policy, though things could change.

“The airline business is certainly one of "never say never." Our

teams have had a chance to quickly review the situation this

weekend. With our low cost business model, we are comfortable

saying that first bags will continue to fly free. Could things change?

Sure, but with what we know right now, no plans to charge. We

hope to welcome you aboard soon.”
